How to Guide: Setting a Casual Dining Table for Small Space Gatherings

Living in a small apartment or home shouldn’t limit your ability to host a few friends and family members for dinner, in fact a smaller space just means more room for creativity! A great option for hosting in a limited dining area is a pub set or smaller dining set (consider a dining table with a removeable leaf). These smaller sets generally stand at counter height set, which will give your space a casual yet simple and sophisticated feel. Follow these tips for setting a casual tablescape on a smaller surface.

1. Start by laying down a placemat. With a smaller table, a placemat will help to keep each diner’s utensils and plates together and can help to keep the layout from feeling over-crowded. Plus, the simpler the better in terms of design!

2. Place the dinner plate in the center of the mat and if necessary, a salad plate right on top.

3. Set the dinner fork to the left of the plate and if needed, the salad fork to the left of the main fork. If this looks too crowded on your table, consider doing away with the salad fork and/or simply providing a dinner fork ocne the main course is ready instead of having it ready on the table.

4. Place the knife to the right of the dinner plate and the spoon, again only if needed, to the right of the knife.

5. Set the water glass just above the knife (and spoon), and the wine glass to the right of the water glass. Be sure to choose either a white or red wine glass based on what you’re serving. Or if you know your guests’ preferences, set out the glass they’d choose!

6. Your napkin can either go on top of the plate(s) or under the fork, to the left of the plate.

7. Lastly, your table’s centerpiece should also be as simple as possible in this small space so consider a single vase of flowers that can be removed during the meal or tall candlesticks that will take up very little space and give your table some added height and evening lighting.

Casual Table Set for a Larger Space

If space is not a concern for you and you’re looking for a larger dining set that’s still fit for casual hosting and dining, consider FFO Home’s Sao Paulo Dining Set. This set is complete with four durable ladder back chairs, a two-seat padded bench and a large table that easily fits six guests. The dining set's simple contemporary design combines black touches with a stunning dark cherry finish. Additional chairs are available for purchase to customize your space in a way that works best for you. Apply the same tips as above for setting the table for a casual dinner party but feel free to play around with additional utensils (e.g. dinner fork and salad fork laid out from the beginning), and options for each guest (e.g. salad plate and/or soup bowl). The design of your place settings can also be more colorful or detailed with the added space since the table won’t feel overcrowded so don’t be afraid to play with different designs and patterns!
